Year 11 Residential Helps Students Get A Head Start In Art

Our Year 11 Art students spent the weekend honing their skills at a special residential trip in North Wales.

The group left Stockport Academy on Friday afternoon to head out to Conway, where they met professional artists who would be supporting them with their work over the coming days.

After splitting up into two groups, they were introduced to the theme of the weekend – focusing on skills based around an ‘urban metropolis’ and developing ideas of portraying cities from different perspectives.

The first group’s artwork was to be based on two-point perspectives and different angles, while the second group worked on bird’s eye views and using shapes and maps to depict city landscapes. After an evening of hard work, the day ended with some social time for students – including a mini disco.

On Saturday, students continued to work on their projects – putting in the hours from 9am-9pm and using that time to develop their work and devise their final pieces. Their efforts were rewarded with a campfire singalong at the end of the day, which included toasting marshmallows and making s’mores!

The final day of the residential saw students finish their work and proudly display it in a gallery alongside projects completed by other schools. After that, it was a case of getting on the coach back to Stockport – with the vast majority of students spending the return journey fast asleep!

Head of Art Ms Stirling said: “I am so proud of everything our Year 11s achieved this weekend. Their standard of work was exceptional and the pieces they produced will be an amazing contribution to their GCSE coursework.

“The Conway staff said our students displayed an outstanding level of behaviour and talent. We couldn’t have had a better time and I’d also like to thank Ms Higgins and Mr Hargreaves who gave up their weekend to help support the Art department in making some lifelong memories with our Year 11 students.”
