Northumbria University passes on study skills to new Year 12s

Stockport Academy's new Year 12s have been visited by representatives from Northumbria University to help them develop their study skills.

The Evolve team there has worked closely with us in the past, offering a wide range of support sessions on university life and how to get the best out of your time.

They were on hand on our induction day at the beginning of term to offer insights into the huge differences between A-Levels and GCSEs and help our sixth formers adjust to the new structure of learning, leading sessions on note-taking, learning styles and revision to add to the previous session on time management.

Student sexplored various note taking styles to try to determine which one suited them best, before they were put to the test with a creative use of songs from BBC’s Horrible Histories.

Our Year 12s were able to complete assessments helping them identify what type of learner they were (kinaesthetic, auditory or visual) and many had no shortage of ideas on how to best implement these into their revision schedules. Combined with sessions on time management and illustrative examples of how to productively use their new-found study periods, Year 12 left feeling thoroughly confident to take on the next stage in the academic journey.

Scott Ford, Stockport Academy Sixth Form Manager, said: "Students told me they found the sessions highly informative and useful, with many never realising before today that there was more than one way to take notes down!

"Thank you very much to Peter and Janine from Northumbria University for spending time with our Year 12s, it was certainly time well spent"

Our new cohort of Year 12s are certainly hitting the ground running and are making the most of our award-winning IAG programme already!
