The entire school turned out in the atrium just before 11am on November 11th, forming orderly lines as they were addressed by Principal Mr McCarron. Meanwhile, students who are members of local cadets groups were allowed to attend in their full uniform and stood to attention above the dance studio.
Head of Humanities Mrs McGahey made a short speech, before Head of Performing Arts Mrs Dines played the last post on her bugle. This was followed by an impeccably-served two-minute silence.
At the end of the silence students from Years 11 and 10 dropped poppies – each displaying messages of gratitude to those who have served in the armed forces – from the top two floors onto the atrium, all still in complete silence.
The only sound to be heard was that of the poppies flickering through the air. Members of the Socially Yours Group, who had been invited to the event as special guests, joined the students in dropping their own poppies.
Mr McCarron said: “The poppy drop is an incredibly moving tradition of Stockport Academy that will go on to honour those in the armed forces – both past and present – for as long as the school exists.
“It is incredibly important to recognise and remember those who have lost their lives in the services of our country and the respect shown by our students today was outstanding.”
