Stockport Academy Teacher Appointed Mental Health Charity Ambassador

One of Stockport Academy’s teachers is set to become a mental health first aider, after being invited to become an ambassador for mental health charity Jamie Horrocks Trust.

PE Teacher Ms Foster, who also plays football for FC United of Manchester’s women’s team, will receive training on how to recognise when someone may need to talk and where they can look to receive professional support, before eventually training others herself.

She will represent the charity along with Aston Villa forward Scott Hogan and Salford City footballer Liam Hogan. At the moment, all football teams are required to have a first aider with them on the pitch – and the trio will work to ensure that someone supporting players’ mental health is seen as serving an equally important role.

Earlier this year, Stockport Academy became the first in the country to achieve the School Mental Health Award, which recognises a dedication to championing student and staff emotional wellbeing, while raising awareness of how those struggling with mental health can be supported.

Ms Foster said: “I am so honoured to have been asked to get involved with Jamie Horrocks Trust. Raising mental health awareness is something I am extremely passionate about and there has been a real push on this issue in school over the past year so I am well aware of just how important this is.

“The work that Jamie Horrocks Trust does to support those struggling with their mental health is brilliant and I am so proud and excited to act as an ambassador for this fantastic charity.”
