Stockport Academy best in the country for young carer support

Stockport Academy has become the only school in the country to be recognised with the top award for the level of support it provides to young carers.
The recognition has been made by the Carers Trust and the Children’s Society’s Young Carers in Focus, giving the Academy the Gold Award for their Young Carers in Schools programme.
It is estimated that there are around 700,000 young carers across the UK, providing emotional, practical or physical care for a parent, sibling or other family member. This is equivalent to one in 12 school children, many of whom are unrecognised and unsupported.
Mrs Fox, Stockport Academy’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Officer, said: “We are immensely proud of this award – it is the ideal recognition of all of the hard work undertaken by the Academy over the years in support of its young carers, who have been an inspiration in resilience and selflessness.
"It is also incredibly important for everyone to appreciate that young carers often don’t even recognise themselves as such, as they consider what they do to be a ‘normal’ part of their everyday lives."
Stockport Academy Principal Mr McCarron commented: "We are committed to providing a comprehensive framework of help and guidance for our young carers. These young people really are the unsung heroes of the Academy community and rightly deserve our full support."
