Stockport Academy welcomes Holocaust survivor

Year 9 students at Stockport Academy have learned about the horrors of the Second World War from an actual survivor of the Holocaust.
Joanna Millan, from the Holocaust Educational Trust, spent 90 minutes telling her story to the encaptivated pupils, before they participated in a question and answer session to better understand the nature of the tragedy in more depth.
After being taken to Therensienstadt concentration camp near Prague in 1943 and the death of her mother the following year, Joanna lived as an orphan in filthy and cramped conditions until the camp’s liberation in 1945. She has been telling her story to schools and universities for the past 25 years.
Stockport Academy Principal Mr McCarron said: “It was a privilege for us to welcome Joanna to our school and her testimony will remain a powerful reminder of the horrors so many experienced. We are grateful to the Holocaust Educational Trust for co-ordinating the visit and we hope that by hearing her testimony, it will encourage our students to learn from the lessons of the Holocaust and make a positive difference in their own lives.”
Local artist Rheanna Sorby has now been commissioned to create a piece of artwork to commemorate Joanna’s visit, which will eventually be displayed within the school.
