Our Year 12s enjoyed a much needed relaxation session this morning courtesy of the Healthy Minds NHS Trust
Healthy Minds works with young people over 16 in the Greater Manchester area. They offer a wide variety of services, from online courses to one-to-one sessions and group workshops, and focus on supporting young people experiencing low mood, stress, anxiety and depression. We know how stressful further education courses can be and how hard our students work for their grades and are always eager to support them if things get a little too much.
Today we got a taster of what the service can offer, with students taking part in an exercise illustrating the effect even a little stress can have on our bodies before being led in a relaxation technique called progressive muscle relaxation. More than a few students (and our Sixth Form Manager Mr Ford) remarked how “every Monday ought to start like this”, with everyone feeling much more ready to face the day. Sixth Form tutor Mrs Campbell commented how students “looked more composed already!”
We were also informed about increasingly prevalent techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and how it is used in a variety of ways within the service (our Psychology students took particular interest in this). We’ll be continuing to work closely with Healthy Minds in the future to ensure all our students feel fully supported as they move through the Sixth Form with us.
